When I was a kid, May Day was my favorite holiday. Not only did the date signal hope for the end of another miserable Midwestern winter, but it was also the date on which I had the excitement of surprising my neighbors and sweethearts with the anonymous paper flowers and baskets I would leave outside their doors. Neighbors told me, years later, that they had known it was me all along—they always caught a glimpse of me, they said, sprinting down their driveway after I had rung the doorbell to draw immediate attention to my May Day gift—but feigned ignorance for my sake. Well, having put some years between that innocent May Day gifter and my present self, I have now become a bit more creative in my anonymous May Day gifting methods.
Now, when May Day rolls around, I teach my children how to make the tissue paper roses and carnations that I learned in my youth and then send them off into the neighborhood to surprise our neighbors with their creations. My own May Day gifting, however, begins a week in advance of May 1st when I sit down, not to make flowers, but to order flower baskets online. I select among spring floral arrangements and exotic flower bunches for my neighbors, co-workers, and family members—finding something to make everyone’s May Day. Conveniently, with flower basket ordering online, I can specify the date I want the basket delivered and include an anonymous note, on which I usually write “Happy May Day!”
The best part is, by the time my children have returned home, both hand-made and professional flower baskets and gift baskets have arrived at our own doorstep. The reciprocal nature of May Day giving makes for a lovely tradition in our neighborhood and among my friends and family. We may forgo the May Pole dance, but we get spring started with our own tradition of gift baskets!
