3 Tips for a Fun Family Easter

by GiftBasket on February 14, 2010

Easter, a time of renewal, rebirth, and celebration, is also a time for family. While I find the winter holidays stressful and draining, Easter comes as a rejuvenating hint of spring, and I like to make it a real celebration in my family. Though I have always adored Easter, I have to be creative to keep it interesting for my husband and kids. Below are some ideas I have collected over the years for keeping Easter fun for the whole family.

1. To make Easter a holiday for the entire family, don’t forget to think up something special for your spouse. He’s likely had a lifetime’s fill of chocolate bunnies and dyed eggs—but he still deserves an Easter basket! I like to order my husband a gourmet food or wine basket—easily purchased online and delivered right to my door—and hide it in the house with the kids’ baskets. While the kids are happily ripping into their chocolate eggs and marshmallow bunnies on Easter morning, my husband and I make plans for enjoying our gourmet Easter basket at the end of the day.

2. While store-bought dye can be fun for your younger children, older kids may enjoy creating their own decorations and dyes at home. Children, by ages 7 or 8, start loosing interest in the mysteries of the Easter Bunny and begin to become more interested in art, chemistry, and making messes. To keep them interested in egg decorating activities, try paper mâche-ing the boiled egg with newspaper or construction paper strips and then painting the finished product. You can make food coloring dye at home by mixing a ½ cup of boiling water with about 30 drops of dye and a teaspoon of vinegar. Be sure to cool the dye before using it. For creative designs, before dipping the eggs in the dye, write over them with crayons, bind them with rubber bands, or wrap them in waxy dental floss. After dying them, remove the bands or floss to uncover the neat designs you’ve made! Or try adding two tablespoons of vegetable oil to the cooled dye—beat to blend the oil and dye—then quickly drop the egg in the mixture while the liquids are still separate; the finished product will be a colorful, marbled egg. You can also experiment with boiling your eggs in tea for more subtly colored eggs.

3. Years after the secret of the Easter Bunny has been discovered, every member of your family will still enjoy the Easter basket or Easter egg hunt. Whether indoors or outdoors, whether a race or a leisurely look around, whether the booty is to be distributed among everyone equally or the finder gets to keep winnings all to his or herself…the options are endless! Be creative and develop your own family Easter tradition over the years; adapt the tradition as your kids grow-up, and everyone in your family will have a great Easter holiday!
